Kilimanjaro Hiking Boots: How to Choose and Prepare | Exuberant Kilimanjaro Safaris

Choose boots for Kilimanjaro with practical advice on fit, waterproofing, socks, summit-night warmth and breaking them in before your trek.

Do I need new boots for Kilimanjaro?

You need suitable boots in good condition, but they don’t have to be new. Boots you already own and have tested on long walks may be a good choice.

Are trail shoes suitable for Kilimanjaro?

Some climbers use trail shoes, particularly on lower sections. Suitability depends on your experience, the route and the conditions. Discuss your footwear with our team, especially for summit night.

Can I rent boots from Exuberant?

Yes. Hiking boots are available to rent, subject to availability and sizing. Please contact us in advance to confirm.

Should boots be tight for the descent?

They should be secure and comfortable, not painfully tight. Adjust the lacing to reduce unwanted foot movement while maintaining circulation and comfort.

Kilimanjaro Boot Talk: What Do You Really Need on

That’s a lot to ask of a pair of shoes. So what should you wear?

The best Kilimanjaro footwear is the pair that

fits your feet, suits the terrain and conditions, and has been tested before your climb

. A famous brand might look great in photographs, but your feet are the ones doing the walking.

What kind of boots do I need for Kilimanjaro?

Many climbers choose

waterproof hiking boots with good grip

, a supportive fit and enough room for their trekking socks.

Boots should feel comfortable over several hours of walking, including on uneven ground and downhill sections. The right choice varies with your feet, experience, route and the conditions expected during your climb.

Some hikers prefer a higher-cut boot, particularly if they like the way it feels around the ankle. Others prefer lighter footwear. Rather than choosing on appearance alone, try different styles and speak to our team about your planned itinerary.

Popular outdoor brands include

Salomon, Zamberlan, Asolo, Merrell and KEEN

, among others. The brand matters less than the fit and suitability of the particular model.

Should my Kilimanjaro boots be waterproof?

Waterproof boots can be useful in wet forest, rain, mud and snow. They also help when crossing damp ground early in the morning.

However, waterproof footwear can feel warmer and less breathable than some non-waterproof options. Whichever boots you choose, keep your feet as dry as practical and carry suitable socks.

Conditions on Kilimanjaro can change, so talk to us before your climb if you’re unsure whether your footwear is appropriate.

How should hiking boots fit?

When trying boots, wear the socks you intend to use on your trek. Check that:

Your toes have room to move.

Your heel feels secure without excessive rubbing.

The boot feels comfortable across the width of your foot.

Your toes don’t repeatedly hit the front when walking downhill.

The fit is secure without being so tight that it causes pressure or restricts circulation.

Feet can swell during long walking days. If possible, try boots later in the day and test them on an incline or stairs before making your choice.

A specialist outdoor shop can help you find a fit that suits your feet.

Break in your boots before you travel

Summit week is a poor time to discover that your boots rub your heels!

Wear your boots on progressively longer walks before your trip. Practise on hills and uneven ground where possible, and include downhill walking in your training.

This gives you time to identify rubbing, adjust your lacing or choose a different pair. It also helps you learn which socks work best. Our

covers this and other common first-time errors.

What socks should I bring?

Bring hiking socks that fit comfortably inside your boots, including warm socks for colder sections and summit night. Avoid choosing socks so thick that they make your boots tight.

Carry a spare pair in your daypack if conditions are wet, and change out of damp socks when practical. If you feel a hot spot or rubbing while walking, tell your guide and deal with it early rather than waiting for a blister to develop.

Do I need different shoes for camp?

A pair of comfortable

camp shoes

can be a welcome treat after a long day in boots. Lightweight shoes or sandals can give your feet a chance to rest while you relax around camp.

Remember that camps can be cold, wet and rocky. Choose something suitable for the conditions, and keep your walking boots ready for early starts.

Should I bring trail shoes as well as boots?

Some climbers like to bring trail shoes or lighter walking shoes for lower sections of the route. A second pair is optional and adds weight, so consider whether you’ll use them.

If you plan to change footwear during the trek, discuss it with your guide before you set off. Your chosen shoes need appropriate grip and protection for the terrain and weather.

for the complete checklist.

Will my boots work with microspikes or crampons?

Not every traction device fits every boot. If snow or ice is expected, ask our team what may be appropriate for your route and the current conditions.

Microspikes and technical crampons are different pieces of equipment. The correct choice depends on the terrain, conditions and compatibility with your boots. If specialised equipment is needed, discuss it with us before the climb rather than assuming anything will fit. Our

explains when and why that equipment may come into play.

Can I rent hiking boots in Moshi?

Selected hiking boots are available to rent through Exuberant,

subject to availability and sizing

. Contact us in advance with your size and travel dates so we can check what is available.

Where possible, arrive with enough time to try rental boots and discuss the fit. Footwear you have already worn and tested is a good way to know how it feels over longer walks.

A quick Kilimanjaro footwear checklist

Before you leave home, ask yourself:

Have I worn my boots on several longer walks?

Do they grip well on uneven ground?

Can I walk downhill without my toes hitting the front?

Do they fit with the socks I plan to wear?

Have I prepared for wet conditions and cold summit temperatures?

Do I have comfortable footwear for camp?

Have I checked compatibility if I may need traction equipment?

The right boots won’t walk the mountain for you—but they can make the journey a lot more comfortable.
