Gaiters for Kilimanjaro: Do You
What do gaiters actually do?
Gaiters cover the opening around the top of a boot and part of the lower leg. They are especially useful when loose material would otherwise work its way into your footwear. Choose a pair compatible with your boots and the conditions you expect.
Short or full-length?
Short gaiters mainly cover the ankle and boot opening. Taller models cover more of the lower leg. Height alone does not establish waterproofness, warmth or suitability. Look at the fabric, fastening, fit and manufacturer’s intended use.
Fit them before the mountain
Try them with your actual boots, socks and trousers.
Fasten the underfoot strap and lace attachment according to the product instructions.
Walk up steps and bend your ankle to check for rubbing or restriction.
Keep straps secured so they cannot catch your other boot.
How do they work with rain trousers?
In rain, arrange waterproof trouser cuffs over the tops of the gaiters so water sheds down the outside, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Gaiters cannot guarantee dry feet, especially if water enters from above or footwear leaks.
Will I need them on summit day?
Discuss current conditions with your guide. Gaiters may help with scree or snow, but they are not traction devices. Microspikes or specialist equipment serve different purposes and must be appropriate for the route and conditions.
Bring or rent?
Check the current equipment list and ask our team about availability and fit before relying on a rental. We do not quote a rental price here because the current published equipment table should remain the reference.
