FAQs

What does shared hut accommodation mean?

Marangu is the only Kilimanjaro route using permanent park huts. You sleep in shared A-frame dormitory huts with communal dining facilities, and you may share with climbers from other groups. Dormitory bunks with blankets are provided. Specific hut facilities are confirmed in your written itinerary; we do not guarantee hotel-style bathrooms or hot showers.

What is the purpose of the Horombo acclimatisation day?

The six-day itinerary includes a full rest day at Horombo Hut, allowing your body to adapt to altitude before the final push to Kibo. Guided acclimatisation walks may be offered towards Mawenzi or Zebra Rocks. This day meaningfully improves summit prospects compared with the shorter five-day option.

Do we descend the same route?

Yes. Marangu ascends and descends the same southeastern trail, which limits scenic variety but simplifies navigation and logistics. The descent retraces the path through moorland and back into the rainforest to Marangu Gate.

What bedding and personal sleeping equipment are required?

The huts provide dormitory bunks with blankets, but you must bring a suitable personal sleeping bag, which is available to rent. Marangu hut accommodation is shared; a private hut is neither included nor promised, and a single-tent supplement does not provide private hut accommodation on the Marangu Route. Full equipment and rental guidance is on our equipment and sleeping-arrangements pages.

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

After registration at Marangu Gate, the trail enters a beautiful montane rainforest. The gradient is gentle and the path well-maintained, making this an enjoyable and encouraging first day. Mandara Hut is a collection of wooden A-frame dormitory huts set in a forest clearing. The nearby Maundi Crater makes a worthwhile short excursion before dinner.

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Leaving the forest, the trail opens into moorland with expansive views towards Kibo and Mawenzi. The landscape becomes increasingly otherworldly as giant heather gives way to giant groundsel and lobelia. Horombo Hut is a large hut complex at altitude with views across both peaks — a comfortable base for two nights.

Horombo Hut — Acclimatisation Day

A full rest day at Horombo Hut allows the body to adapt to altitude before the final push. Guided acclimatisation hikes are offered towards Mawenzi or Zebra Rocks, providing excellent views and an opportunity to test fitness at elevation. Eat, rest, hydrate and keep movement light — this day significantly improves summit prospects.

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Today the trail leaves moorland behind and enters a stark, rocky alpine desert known as the Saddle — a broad ridge connecting Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Kibo Hut sits directly beneath the crater wall, providing shelter but minimal comfort. An early dinner is followed by a short rest before the midnight summit departure.

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

At around midnight we begin the summit push, ascending steep scree and volcanic ash to Gillman's Point on the crater rim, then continuing across the crater rim path to Uhuru Peak. After celebrating at Africa's highest point, we descend all the way back to Horombo Hut — a long but rewarding day combining the summit and descent in one sweep.

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

The final descent retraces the ascent route through moorland and back into the forest. Tired legs will appreciate the gentle gradient. At Marangu Gate, park formalities are completed and summit certificates issued. Our vehicle collects the group and transfers everyone back to the hotel in Moshi for a celebratory dinner.

Kilimanjaro Climb Routes

The Marangu Route is the standard hut-based route on Mount Kilimanjaro, usually completed in five or six days. It approaches from the southeast through Mandara, Horombo and Kibo huts, with ascent and descent following the same main trail. The six-day itinerary adds an acclimatisation day. Exuberant Kilimanjaro Safaris arranges guided Marangu climbs from Moshi.

Route Overview

Why choose the Marangu Route?

The Marangu Route — affectionately nicknamed the Coca-Cola Route — is Kilimanjaro's only hut-based itinerary. Rather than camping under canvas, climbers sleep in permanent A-frame dormitory huts with communal dining facilities at each camp. The route ascends and descends the same trail on the southeastern face of the mountain, passing through lush rainforest, high moorland and stark alpine desert before reaching the crater rim via Gillman's Point. Our recommended six-day itinerary includes a full rest day at Horombo Hut for acclimatisation, meaningfully improving summit success compared to the standard five-day option. Marangu suits those who value shelter and a well-established, straightforward trail — especially in poor weather.

How the altitude builds

The Marangu Route is a steady, consistent ascent followed by a long descent on the same trail, passing Marangu Gate, Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut, Kibo Hut, Gillman's Point and Uhuru Peak. The acclimatisation rest day at Horombo matters because the final climb from Kibo Hut to the summit is sharp and demanding, and it benefits enormously from the extra rest day included in our six-day programme. The day-by-day itinerary below gives the altitude of each camp.

Looking beyond the standard trek? Marangu is also the approach route for our specialist Mawenzi Peak Climb , a technical expedition that can be combined with a separate Uhuru Peak ascent.
