Choose protection you will use
Bring a labelled sunscreen that suits your skin, and try it before travel. Higher SPF does not remove the need to apply enough or reapply. Follow the label and ask a clinician or pharmacist if you have allergies or a skin condition.
Make it part of the morning routine
Apply sunscreen before going outdoors and reapply about every two hours while outside, and after sweating, following the label. Remember exposed ears, neck and hands. Use SPF lip protection and keep it accessible rather than buried in the porter-carried duffel.
Cover up too
A brimmed hat and suitable long sleeves can reduce exposed skin. UPF-labelled clothing provides a stated level of ultraviolet protection. Choose layers that work with wind, rain and temperature changes; sunscreen is one part of the system.
Does darker skin need protection?
Yes. Skin tone does not remove the need for protection. Choose a product you are comfortable using regularly and combine it with shade and clothing where practical.
Are Vaseline or coconut oil alternatives?
Ordinary petroleum jelly and coconut oil should not be presented as substitutes for tested, labelled sunscreen. A moisturising product is not automatically a sun-protection product. Check the SPF and broad-spectrum labelling of anything you intend to use for sun protection.
Protect your eyes
Choose sunglasses labelled for appropriate UVA and UVB protection and a comfortable fit with your hat or headwear. Polarisation and UV protection describe different properties. Read our sunglasses guide .
Pack for the whole day
Keep sunscreen, SPF lip protection, sunglasses and your sunhat in the daypack, including for the descent after a summit attempt. Ask for a pause in a suitable place if you need to adjust layers or reapply.
